Start safely — the core idea

Your hardware wallet keeps private keys offline. Trezor Start walks you through initializing the device, securing the recovery seed, and connecting to the official Suite application so you can manage crypto with confidence.

1. Verify official sources Always download Trezor Suite and Bridge from trezor.io/start or suite.trezor.io. Avoid links in unsolicited emails or social posts.
2. Initialize the device Power your Trezor, follow on-screen prompts to create a new wallet or restore a previous one. The device will generate a recovery seed — write it down by hand and store it offline.
3. Confirm on-device Every critical action (PIN, passphrase toggle, transaction approval) is confirmed on the device screen. Never enter your seed on a computer or phone.
4. Connect to Trezor Suite Open Trezor Suite, connect your device via USB, and follow Suite prompts to add accounts and view balances.

Security Principles

Hardware-first security: private keys never leave your device. Trezor’s firmware and the Suite client implement cryptographic checks so you can verify software authenticity and transaction details without exposing secrets.

Use a PIN and consider an optional passphrase for an added layer of protection. The passphrase creates an alternate wallet that exists only when entered.

Recovery Seed — Your backup

The 12 or 24-word recovery seed is the only way to recover funds if the device is lost or damaged. Record it on paper or a certified seed plate; never photograph or store it digitally.

If you believe the seed has been exposed, move funds to a new wallet immediately and generate a fresh seed on a new device.

Trezor Suite

Trezor Suite is the official app for managing accounts, receiving/sendings, firmware updates and device settings. Use the desktop app or the web client at suite.trezor.io.

Suite shows detailed transaction information that you must verify on the physical device before approving.

Firmware & Updates

Only apply firmware updates from Trezor’s official channels. Updates are digitally signed; Suite will guide you through applying them. Firmware ensures your device has the latest security protections.

Never install firmware from unverified sources or follow links from strangers.

Integrations

Trezor supports integrations with wallets and services like MetaMask and Electrum. When using third-party apps, authorize actions via the Trezor device so private keys remain offline.

Confirm every transaction on your device and prefer trusted, open-source third-party tools.

Troubleshooting

If your device is not recognized, try a different USB cable, restart Suite, or check OS permissions. The official support knowledge base has step-by-step fixes: trezor.io/support.

If a recovery attempt fails repeatedly, contact official support rather than following unverified community fixes.

Next Steps

After setup, add the accounts you use, send a small test transaction, and consider reading additional security guidance on the Trezor support site. Keep your device firmware and Suite app updated.
